The roadmap to get every MCPS student reading on grade level.

Following an impactful literacy forum, we would like to share an op-ed by BBC cofounders Diego Uriburu and Byron Johns published on November 25, 2023 in MoCo360, which highlights the Black and Brown Coalition's immediate asks in addressing the underlying inequities affecting our Black and Brown children's literacy proficiency:

Opinion: How to get every MCPS student reading on grade level | MoCo360

Dear Community Members,

As our guests of honor, your attendance helped to make the Black and Brown Coalition's Getting Reading Right, NOW! Literacy forum a huge success!

The real work is now!

Together we can advocate for an easy-to-understand, clear, EARLY ALERT SYSTEM on our children's report card.

Together, we can advocate for the interventions our school system says exist; where they are not available, we must demand that they be provided on behalf of our children.

We need your help. We need your stories. Please, raise your voices with us.

As promised, the information that the BBC shared during last night's forum will be used to continue working together with you, to raise all of our voices so that ALL of our children, Black and Brown in particular, learn to read on or above grade level! You can view our full slide presentation here.

Please stay engaged with us! Follow us on all social media platforms and visit our website as we will soon share details about the next forum which will take place in January 2024.

Black + Brown United = Power to Make Change

Thank you!

On Thursday, November 9, 2023, at 6:30 pm, the Black and Brown Coalition for Educational Equity and Excellence is hosting a community forum highlighting the urgent need to get more Black, Brown and low-income students reading on grade level.

"Get Reading Right. Now!" will examine the current state of literacy for Black and Brown students and raise up voices of caregivers and students to push for more progress getting struggling students help as soon as they need it. Parents/caregivers must have easy to understand information about how their children are performing and must be part of the solution when their students fall behind. MCPS will also share information about promising practices for change.

Please join us to learn more about this critical subject and to support our collective advocacy for effective solutions. Success in college, career and life depends upon students -- ALL students -- being successful readers.

Standing united the Black and Brown communities have the power to get results.
